The sacred precinct of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya and the ancient stupa of Kiri Vehera are a short walk away, as are the town centre and its shops.

The nearest international gateway is Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, about 37 km by road, or roughly 50 minutes by car; the domestic Weerawila Airport is around half an hour away. The property can arrange an airport shuttle and car hire at extra charge. From Colombo, the Southern Expressway leads towards Hambantota, and express buses via Tissamaharama take around five hours. If you drive, parking on site is free, and within Kataragama tuk-tuks are the easiest way to get around. Note that check-in runs only from 13:30 to 14:00, so plan your arrival around it or contact the property beforehand.
The heart of Kataragama is the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya. Pilgrims bathe in the Menik Ganga before entering, and the evening puja, around 18:30, is the most atmospheric time to go; wear clothes covering shoulders and knees, and leave your shoes at the entrance. Close by rises Kiri Vehera, an ancient stupa, while Sella Kataragama lies about 4 km away. Tissamaharama, with its ancient Buddhist sites and great stupa, is some 16 km away. For wildlife, the Katagamuwa entrance to Yala National Park is around 13 minutes' drive. Yala's main blocks usually close for several weeks around September and October, so check before booking a safari. December to March brings the most comfortable weather, and the Esala festival in July and August is spectacular but very crowded.
